How I learn and remember new words?

'When I learn and remember new words,' I told an Indonesian classmate at the British Council, 'I always make word cards.' She didn't know word cards, but they are a common way of remembering new words among Japanese students. For example, If I want to remember the word 'submit', I write the word and a use of the word, for example, 'submit a document' on the front of a card, and write the meaning and part of speech of the word in Japanese on the reverse side. Then I use the word and phrases in English emails or letters as occasion arises.
